The Mexican AIP (commonly called the "PIA" by pilots down here in Mexico) is now available on-line. We have already signed up and tested it out and it is quite good. However, officially it IS NOT the official AIP, only the paper and CD versions are the authentic ones that can be used.

Therefore, Charter operators and Mexican pilots will still need to haul around the paper version in their aircraft. The good news is that you can now access the approaches and a host of other information for airports in Mexico. Remember, these are not considered "official" so technically you cannot use them for IFR operations but they are handy to have nonetheless.

To access the on-line AIP go to the following link. Once you are on the main page you need to register to set up an account. THE WEBSITE ONLY APPEARS TO WORK WITH GOOGLE CHROME (THERE IS ACTUALLY A STATEMENT TO THAT EFFECT ON THE SITE, WE COULD NOT GET IT TO WORK WITH IE9). Once you complete the registration steps, the system will send you an email to confirm your account registration. This email will contain a link which once you click on it, the registration process will be complete and you will be able to access the AIP. We had been asking for an on-line AIP for a long time and are happy to see it become a reality.

To view instrument approaches for airports, do the following:

Once you have created your account and you are logged in, you will see a menu bar on the left hand side of the screen. To the left of the AD 2 (Aerodrome 2) you will see a “+”, click on this and it will open up a list of airports by ICAO code. To the left of each one is also a “+”, click on the “+” next to the airport you want and it will show all of the information available for that airport.

We have been told that the AIP website works with Internet Explorer 10 as well as Google Chrome. We have had to roll back to IE9 at the office due to problems with IE10 and a number of critical systems and websites that we use, so we cannot verify. If anyone else has any experiences with IE10 and the AIP website to share, please post them here.

We have spoken with SENEAM to advise them that the website is not operating. They have advised their systems department. I will continue to follow up to see what happens.

We had a conference call today with the department within SENEAM responsible for the eAIP. Here is the short answer:

Mexico's DGAC has asked SENEAM to take the site off-line because they want to review and correct a few minor issues that they have detected with the content. These details are currently under review and they hope to have the site back up within two weeks.

We contacted SENEAM again today to determine when the on-line AIP will be working again. We spoke with the head of the IS group that runs the project at SENEAM who informed us of the following:

All of the corrections and modifications requested by the DGAC have been completed and compiled.
The new version is going to be submitted to the DGAC Fri, 06-DEC-2013 for review and approval
Once approved by the DGAC, the changes will be uploaded to the SENEAM server and the site re-activated. They are shooting for this to be completed by the end of December, 2013

We followed up once again with SENEAM to find out if and when they plan to reactivate the on-line AIP. What we learned is that they are still waiting on Mexico's DGAC to give them the green light to turn it back on. SENEAM says they have made all of the modifications that were requested of them but they have not yet received the OK to restore the sight to operation. They understand and share our frustration because the cost of the software and the website for the online AIP is significant and it is just being wasted. We hope to have better news soon.

Sad that over a year later this is still not online.

We are leaving in a few minutes for Mexico City for meetings with the Director General of Civil Aviation and other Federal Authorities. We will bring this up to see if there is any news on if/when it will be operational again.
