There is a new twist to using the new Mexican AIU at some airports. For reasons unbeknown to us, and not supported by law, the AFAC inspectors in some airports are demanding to see ALL of the documents related to your flight into Mexico when you requested your original AIU.

Here is the scenario. You flew into airport A in Mexico, requested an AIU (there is a form to do that), paid for the AIU (you get a receipt for that), obtained an AIU (you get the document) and you close your flight plan (there is form for that too). All of this at airport A. Then you return to Mexico and land at Airport B where the inspector demands to see not only the AIU and payment receipt but also the original request and the flight plan closing form. If you cannot produce them then you are in a big "problem" whereby you will be grounded until the comandante resolves it. Since you already have a valid AIU, you cannot request another one and be gone. By now, you are getting the picture.

So, we recommend that you keep the original AIU request and the flight plan closure form in addition to the AIU and receipt. Attached you will find what those documents look like. Again, this is only happening at a select few "troublesome" Mexican airports, but these types of issues are like a fungus and seem to spread to other airports, so best to be prepared.
