We have received complaints from pilots that have flown to the Torreon International Airport recently. The complaints revolved around excessive fees and frustrations trying to find all of the necessary offices to get fees paid and flight plans filed.

In order to get to the bottom of the issue, we made an international arrival at MMTC while returning from our Baja Adventure Fly-In this past Saturday. We flew from Nogales, Arizona and landed in MMTC. The following day we made a domestic departure enroute to our home base in Puebla, Mexico.

Unfortunately, what we found was exactly what was reported. First there are a number of FBO's at the airport and if you request their services you may be in for a shock. While the services will probably relieve a lot of the headaches, they come at a price. Therefore, you should determine the costs involved before requesting their services.

If you are not going to use an FBO, then you should park on the General Aviation ramp which is located..... you guessed it, at the opposite end of the airport. Next, you have to complete the entry formalities then cross the entire length of the airport and request entry into the terminal building to close your flight plan. Getting fuel is virtually impossible unless you have a copy of the Caribbean Sky Tours Pilot's Guide which contains their telephone number. Otherwise, you basically cannot even get to their offices to request fuel.

Bottom line, the individual people we dealt with at ASA Fuel, DGAC and SENEAM were polite courteous and helpful. However, the layout of the airport, location of offices and procedures implemented by the airport management are horrendous. The security people at the entry and exit points were clearly not trained for General Aviation.

Therefore, unless you have a burning need to go to Torreon, Mexico, you should avoid this airport for domestic and international arrivals.

This report on the services at Torreon are from 2014. Does anyone have any recent information and experience on the services at Torreon?
