I've only flown into Mexico once, to Ensenada, and that was VFR. Admittedly, I was not well prepared ( prior to joining CST) and was unable to contact anyone after crossing the border until within the 25 miles of Ensenada. The tower was very gracious about that. In April, I'm planning a flight from KLHM to MMML with a stop to refuel and clear, then to MMLT to fuel again then on to MMSL for 10 days. Would you all recommend IFR to MMML then VFR after or IFR the entire route. I'm flying a Vans RV-9A if that helps. Thanks, David

Hi David,
We would recommend that you stop at Calexico, CA (KCXL) to refuel and skip Mexicali altogether. You could file VFR from KCXL to MMLT and also VFR or IFR from MMLT to MMSL.
Your route of flight would take you outside of MMML's airspace so you would not have to talk to them. You could also consider landing in MMSF to clear and refuel as it is an "easy" airport for inbound aircraft. You could then fly VFR from MMSF to MMLT and VFR to MMSL.

Would you elaborate on your recommendation, please? I have seen postings about fuel availability in MMSF so I thought MMML would be smarter. Having no prior experience you recommendation is important. Thank you, David
